Reasons for Wanting to Learn Japanese

Without a doubt, it does take a little longer to master Japanese compared to many other languages. But it is possible, as any of the 500,000 US citizens who live in Japan will probably tell you. Around the world, Japanese is spoken by more than 120 million people, making it a more significant language than many people realize. It’s not a small group, just an exclusive one.

Companies from Japan are represented in nearly every major country in the World, befitting of one of the world’s greatest export economies. Speaking Japanese is a clear advantage if you work for a Japanese corporation, or if you want to do so.

Even to this day, in major Japanese corporations many of the very senior positions outside Japan are held by Japanese people. However, many non-Japanese have advanced by moving to the headquarters in Japan and working there for a few years, before being promoted to a senior position in their home country. But for that, you need to learn Japanese. While many of the larger companies offer in-house programs, you will get noticed if you take the initiative and begin to learn it yourself.

The Japanese culture is one where respect is everything. You will earn great respect by showing them the honor of learning their language. It is better to begin with learning to speak Japanese. The written form can be tacked later.

Japan is a country of adventurous travelers. Being able to speak Japanese is of great value to employers in the hospitality industry. From both a personal and professional perspective, there are many advantages to being able to talk with Japanese tourists.

Japanese grammar is simpler than that of many other languages. There are no noun genders, no accompanying articles, and no plural forms to learn while studying Japanese. In Japanese there are only the past and present tenses, and also there are not many irregular verbs. Japanese pronunciation is quite easy, due to the fact that there are only five vowel sounds and also because spelling is always phonetically obvious.

Japanese culture (and the language) has been greatly influenced by China, Korea, and India, some of the greatest world civilizations. Western traditions and habits are shared across Western cultures, and Asian cultures similarly share many habits and traditions. Greater insights can be had into the religious, aesthetic, and ethical values of other Asian nations by studying Japanese as many of these are shared across Asian cultures. A familiarity with Asian cultures also allows you to step outside of your own culture and see the Japanese and Asian cultures in a whole new and fresh light.
