Reasons to Learn Chinese
The good reasons to learn Chinese are growing all the time. Absent a specific reason to learn another version of Chinese, the best choice is Mandarin.
With literally thousands of symbols to master, written Chinese can be challenging to learn, and I would recommend starting with spoken Chinese. Spoken Chinese is a totally different matter. Spoken Chinese is very straightforward to master – no tenses, no conjugations, and very simple prepositions. Indeed, spoken Chinese is easier to learn than any European language.
In the future, the Chinese language will undoubtedly take on more importance and significance internationally. Now one or the world’s great powers, China is finally taking its rightful place. Already its economy is the second biggest, and it is hard to look anywhere without seeing something made in China. It stands to reason that the shifting economic balance will be directly responsible for a similar shift in opportunities, to the benefit of those who learn to speak Chinese. Let’s face it – if you were a Chinese businessman, would you not prefer to speak to a foreign partner or supplier who spoke your language. Indeed I would.
One in five or the world’s people live in China, and China purchases a lot of goods and services from the USA. There is no doubt that an increasing amount of communication will be in Chinese. Would the conversation not be much more productive and beneficial if there is no translator involved?
Taiwan and China present excellent vacation opportunities. Being able to communicate with locals makes any trip a much more rewarding travel experience. The benefits are huge.
Exposure to Chinese or Mandarin Chinese will allow you greater insight into China’s vast and interesting cultural history.
In both the USA and Europe, Chinese is now one of the languages studied most. Being able to include Chinese on a college application may give you an edge. Also, as you review the job openings in your local paper or on the internet, you will see more and more companies listing Chinese as a desired, or required, skill. With the increasing number of opportunities, do you really want to exclude yourself or your children. There is no need to answer, as the answer is obvious.
Also, learning another language, whether or not it is Chinese, has been found to be good for the brain. So there are benefits on all fronts – mental, physical, and financial, if you learn Chinese.
