In North America the Spanish people are decidedly less formal than their Latin America Spanish speaking neighbors.
It is quite acceptable to greet someone you already know with hola or hello. The wisest thing would be to use a much more formal greeting though, if you are greeting someone for the first time.

Greeting two or perhaps more people?
It’s expected that if you meet more than one person, in Latin America , you should greet everyone individually. There will be quite a lot of hand shaking and double kissing of the opposite sex involved.
To ask someone how they are doing is considered to be polite behaviour. The best way to do this is to say; Como estas – how’s it going? To people you know, and como esta usted, to complete strangers. Como means how. And estas means are you or you are.
