Have you decided to take a year out of normalcy? Be it before heading off to university, taking a break from work, or enjoying your retirement, a gap year can be a great way to meet new people and discover new cultures. People tend to go two ways on a gap year, choosing from a relaxing extended holiday or using the time to do something practical. Whichever one you choose, it is the ideal opportunity to go to a place you have always dreamed about visiting.

If you are looking to combine fun in the sun with visits to historical monuments and architecture, a European tour is ideal. A lot of Europe is still relatively undiscovered my most Britains. In Italy you can find history, architecture, nature and glamour. Whilst Russia is no longer thought of as part of Europe, the culture is definitely different. Whilst a lot of the continent is still plagued by poverty, there are pockets of wealth and splendour that have lasted since the time of the tsars. St Petersburg and Moscow are must visit cities where architecture, history and vodka combine. Getting away from the classic British holiday destinations into somewhere a little less well travelled is what a gap year is all about.

If you are in need of new skills to put on your CV that will make you a more attractive candidate for jobs, you can use a year abroad to do this.   Volunteering projects have become very popular, as have teaching jobs abroad. A skill that employees are coming to value is teaching English as a foreign language, something you can do in a gap year. People with experience in different industries are good at teaching English as a foreign language as they have experience in communication, but Teflworld say that young and old alike make great Tefl teachers.

So if you are planning a gap year, do what you like, but remember to do something different! Don’t just think that a couple of weeks away amidst twelve months of sitting on your sofa counts as a gap year. Whatever you do, make sure you make some memories that you can treasure forever.
