Along with Romanian, French, Spanish and Portuguese, the Italian language descends from Latin, and can be traced back to the tenth century. However, the Italian language did not start to fully take shape and form as a standard language until four centuries later.

Today you can find close to seventy million native Italian speakers. The vast majority of people touting the Italian language reside in Italy, Vatican, San Marino, and even Switzerland, but there are a few outlying communities popping up in Slovenia, Malta, Croatia, the United States, and even South America.

Italian is famous for its countless, colorful dialects. You might find certain linguists willing to say people in different cities of Italy speak different languages. The nearest dialects to standard Italian are Tuscan, Romanesco, Umbrian and Laziale and on the other side Sicilian and Neapolitan are so far from Italian as to be almost considered different languages.

The amount of Italian letters is twenty-one but there are five other letters applied to names from other countries. While the heart of the language resides in Latin origin, over the centuries words borrowed from the German, French and English languages, keep Italian new and ever-changing. Italian word and phrases also find their way into the vocabularies of foreign countries, usually when talking about art, music or food.

The Italian grammar has a Latin base, so therefore its main features are shared with other Romance languages. As with these languages, word order most often follows the order Subject-Verb-Object and so on with nouns determined by gender and number, finding agreement with adjectives, while verbs agree with their subjects and are placed based on person and number.

Because of the many similarities to other Romance languages, the Italian language is relatively easy for someone who already speaks a Romance language to learn. Despite this fact, English and German speakers tend to be most attributed with learning the language.
