Body Reflects The Mind

The non-verbal language is communicated through the body gestures and is called body language. Humans constantly communicate with the body using physiologic signs, gestures, and postures with which communications are made to other people. They constantly send out this non-verbal body language. Some of common body languages are harsh or blank facial expressions to indicate hostility and aloofness is indicated by crossing his or her arms across the chest. Disbelief is expressed with aversion of gaze or scratching of the chin or even touching the ear while consistent eye contact demands attention. When one tilts the head or gives unfocused eye contact, the message is that of boredom. When there is excessive blinking, the person must be lying. However, when these gestures are combined with other gestures and verbal communication, the messages could be different.

Hands and legs too express and communicate messages. For instance, putting hands on knees for readiness, putting hands on hips for impatience, locking hands behind back for self-control, locking hands behind head for confidence, putting leg over the arm of the chair for indifference, pointing legs and arms in a particular direction to indicate interest in the direction, and crossing arms for submissiveness are few such body languages.

The extent of non-verbal communication within all types of human communication is not precisely concluded. Opinions differ. Some say that it is as high as 80 percent of all communication while some put it between 50 to 65 percent. Attitudes as well as feelings, it is believed, are best expressed with body language. Putting together the words, the tone of the words spoken and the body language together could give a better understanding of what the person is communicating. There are many gestures that are natural, unintentional and spontaneous. These include such gestures a finger lock, an eye rub, a nose itch, a chin rest, a lip touch, an ear scratch, and a head scratch. Whether these have any meaning is what many are trying to find out. Serious attempts to read body language are going on in the form of intensive and extensive research.

Knowledge about reading body language has many benefits. It can improve your ability to understand and read people. It could assist in gaining confidence. It can improve your communication skills. It is also useful in mental health, both in diagnosis and treatment.
