Never quite found the time? Then that time is now – deciding to study a second language has never been simplier! Most people put off learning a new language because they see it as a long, complicated, and often frustrating process, and they’re really surprised to discover that nowadays, it’s nothing like those dull language lessons they remember from their schooldays. What if you knew that you could set your own pace, be confidently using Italian words and phrases within only a few hours, learn vocabulary that is useful and relevant to real life, everyday situations, and do it all at your own pace and from the comfort of your own home (or even car!)?
Yes, that’s what I thought. That sounds much more appealing than having to forcefully dragging yourself off to language classes does’nt it? These days, the internet has changed our world and the way that we live our lives — and language learning is no exception. You can learn how to speak Italian by utilising the vast amount of language software online, and it could’nt be easier to find a method that suits you.
So, where to start? No matter how you choose to learn italian, there are some things you should always apply when learning a second language. The most important one is this: determination. It’s no use diving in all full of enthusiasm and cramming in vast amounts of information for a few days, and then not returning to your studies until a week or two later. Learning slow and at a steady pace is always going to win the day! Your brain retains information much quicker if you feed it little bits at a time and at regular intervals. So make some time each day, even if it seems small. 15 minutes every morning and evening, for example, is vastly more beneficial than a mammoth 4 hour study session once a week.
Don’t set yourself unachievable targets, or you’ll just leave yourself frustrated and disapointed. Instead, work on becoming completely and comfortably familiar with whatever you can in the daily time slot that you’ve allotted for your learning. Regardless of whether its verbs, vocabulary or a specific grammar rule, concentrate on memorising it for around 15-30 minutes. And then – this is the most important part – come back to it at the start of your next “study time”. Revision and review is the key to success in learning to speak any language. Go over what you learned last time before you move on to something new. Remember to keep revisiting to ensure you remember! This is the same reason we’re made to take tests at school.
A good way to make sure that your previous study remains firmly lodged in your head is to keep yourself familiar with it. If you can practise conversation on a regular basis with a friend, study partner, or even some language learning software, you’ll quickly become confident and comfortable with using what you’ve already learned. Not learning at regular intervals will cause you to forget and struggle to remember certain words when trying to repeat sentences…. I know, I have learned this word!” kind of way.
Regular study sessions, and plenty of practice and revision. Master that, and you’ll learn how to speak italian in a really short space of time, you’ll no doubt even surprise yourself!
