Sparkling Gems From The Greek: 365 Greek Word Studies For Every Day Of The Year To Sharpen Your Understanding Of God’s Word By Rick Renner
Many people have already mistaken the book Sparkling Gems from the Greek by Rick Renner to be a foreign studies text book. Its cover has a plain dark blue background with sparkling gems and letterings. And if you don’t really take time to check its cover, you might even not be able to see the part where the subtitle says this book is for God. Plus, its 1000-paged thickness also resembles those of dictionaries and encyclopedias that you only see in school libraries. But then just as the saying says, we should not judge a book by the cover. Because whether you like its fancy appearance or not, Sparkling Gems from the Greek is not just any book that you simply add to your collection.
Sparkling Gems from the Greek is basically a devotional. Renner lists devotionals in this book that he intends for his readers to use everyday of their lives. Then, this is the reason as to why the book is a little heavy, because it carries 365 devotional for users to read all year-long. Unlike many other books, each daily reading is properly measured – they’re not too long to bore the readers yet not to short to keep them hanging.
Renner begins every reading with a verse or a scripture from the New Testament as this will then open a certain “topic” for the day. If you’ve been uncertain as to why the Greeks are included in the title of the book, the following will then be your much-awaited clarity. It was in Greek that the New Testament was actually written first. However, the entire New Testament has been translated by religious groups and language experts into the English language when it was adopted into the English bible.
This is the main ingredient that makes Sparkling Gems from the Greek a cut above the rest of the devotionals available, because Renner translates the New Testament using his own words. He does not get scriptures from the bible, but he extracts directly from the raw messages of the Greek New Testament. After the opening scripture in the book’s readings, Renner proceeds to talk further about the issue. He also never fails to include encouraging comments to help his readers. The daily readings will then be closed by a prayer and a declaration of faith regarding the day’s topic. And then, Renner leaves off with a set of questions that especially pertains to the lesson of the day.
The only negative sides to buying this book would be it’s high price and bulky exterior. In terms of its contents, everything is really flourished. Rick Renner is very confident in the way he chooses to write about God, his faith and his religious opinions, a specific quality that a devotional author must possess to guide his readers. The book Sparkling Gems from the Greek is a must-have.
